How To Start And Grow Your YouTube Channel: Top 7 Tips

Hey guys, welcome back to my blog; you know the vibes already! Thank you so much for your amazing response to my first blog post, last week. This week's blog topic was requested by one of you and it's about tips on how to start and grow your YouTube channel.

So, as you guys may know, I've been on YouTube for a while now. I first jumped on it back in 2014 with a group of uni friends. But I started my own personal channel, as you know it now, just over a year ago.

So, I have roughly 6 years of experience on YouTube. It's crazy to think how much time has flown by! So, here are some tips that have helped me grow my audience on YouTube:

1. Be Consistent To Grow Your Channel

When you start your YouTube channel, you should go in with the goal of being consistent. Your audience will expect content from you and it's important for you to deliver this. Being consist helps to build your audience and allows them to get to know you better.

Don't get too caught up on what content you deliver. You can be creative with making the simplest topic into something engaging for your audience.

For me personally, filming different clips in a day helps keep up with my consistency and pre-planning my content.

When you are a new YouTuber in particular, don't feel like you need to be a perfectionist. It's all a journey, guys! You will learn what works best for you and your audience as you go along the journey.

2. Equipment For Your YouTube Channel

Going back to what I said about being a perfectionist, you can start off filming on a standard smartphone. Most smartphones nowadays are built for good camera quality. Guys, would you believe I still vlog on my iPhone sometimes? So, it deffo works! But, I use my Canon EOS 80D for filming content where I sit down, like chit chat videos. I use this lens with that camera.

The key thing when it comes to filming is lighting! You can have a great camera, but if the lighting isn't right, it can really affect the quality of the video.

Natural light is great to catch when you can, but you can't always rely on it, so a ring light is a must-have in my books! I use this Neewer set. I also use this soft-box lighting set.  Also guys, a crisp and clean background is so so important! When I watch other YouTube videos and I see clutter in the background, it puts me off.

You want the content you show your audience to be appealing and mess is not attractive!

So, make sure the background you are using for your video looks clean and presentable. If you can't yet afford a background kit, find a simple clean wall you can make use of to film.

A clean background and lighting are two key things to make clean video content and a valuable tip on how to start and grow your YouTube channel.

3. Editing To Grow Your YouTube Channel

There are so many apps you can use for editing your videos. Even when starting out on a low budget!

I started out using iMovie, which is free with Apple Macbook’s. But now I have upgraded to Final Cut Pro.

Also guys, don't feel like you need to be an expert editor when starting out. YouTube is sooo great for learning new skills.

Anytime there's a skill I need to know, I just jump on YouTube and find tutorials to help me!

4. Collaborations

This is another key point on how to start and grow your YouTube channel.

Having friends and connections who you can collaborate with, deffo helps with boosting your audience.

It helps to expand the amount of people you're reaching as you are joining up with another person's audience base.

But with video, any sense of awkwardness easily comes across. So, make sure it's an organic and not forced collaboration. You have to catch the vibes with them - you have to know the vibes already! Pun intended 😜

Having YouTube friends can also be a way of gaining tips and inspiration from each other. Growing an audience when starting isn't the easiest thing. It takes resilience and consistency. So, having a friend who understands the struggle really helps when times are low. They can help you in times when you're losing motivation and encourage you to keep going.

5. Thumbnails & Title

Youtube application

You've heard the saying first impressions count right? Well, it's the same thing on YouTube! YouTube is a visual platform first and foremost and so people need to be drawn in by what you show them.

This is why your thumbnail and title are so important! It's what your viewers will see before even clicking on your video.

There are even apps to help you achieve great appealing thumbnails. This includes SuperimposeX and Thumbnail Maker.

When it comes to creating a title for your video, try to make it as interesting as possible. Think about a generic topic, so that people can find your channel a little easier, as you’re unlikely to have a big following when you first start. Through choosing generic topics with an engaging thumbnail and title, people are more likely to come across your content.

For example, if you wanted to create a video about zodiac signs, or something that on the surface may seem generic or 'boring', to draw people in closer, you could make the title 'Libra drags zodiac signs for 10 minutes straight'. This gains more interest as opposed to a simple title like 'what I think about zodiac signs'. That's what I'd do anyway 🤷🏾‍♀️ .

That is specifically when you are starting out your channel.

As your channel grows, you can begin customising your titles more towards your own personality as you will have more of an audience who know you. Then they will have more of a reason to click on videos with titles based around your personality.

Keeping up with trends is also a key part of taking advantage of YouTube SEO (Search Engine Optimisation). SEO is basically taking advantage of features that help increase your reach as a YouTuber. Through creating videos around trends, you can expand how many people come across your content. Did you know YouTube is the second biggest search engine globally? That means there's such a great opportunity for you to gain organic exposure without having to invest in ads! Take advantage of this by looking at popular video topics and ideas and create content around this.

6. Be Yourself To Grow Your YouTube Channel

As cliche as it may sound, it's so important to be yourself on YouTube! As mentioned earlier, awkwardness comes across on camera instantly. Your audience will clock this quick time. Trust me! They can tell when someone is forcing it. But people will connect and relate to you so much more when you are freely being yourself. And when you force a look, you can’t really keep up with it in the long term. But when you are simply being yourself, you will attract the right loyal audience for your channel. Don't build your platform on fakery.

7. Promote Yourself To Grow Your YouTube Channel

Although there are SEO techniques you can use on YouTube, you still need to promote yourself on other platforms too. Especially when you're starting out.

Instagram is another good visual social media platform to do this. I also have Twitter and share my content there.

Do this with all pieces of content you create, to let people know you are still creating and that you are consistent.

Till this day, I still retweet my old videos, at least once a week. 😂

I hope these tips on how to start and grow your YouTube channel help you on your journey. And guys, you're more than welcome to comment below any other tips you may have for growing an audience on YouTube!

  • This is great! I just started mine last month and the consistency bit is what I’m struggling with. Also, the awkwardness. Not because I’m trying to be fake, but just because I’m an introvert and still getting used to talking out loud to a camera lol
